All-Star weekend was quite a show in San Francisco -- people really seemed to enjoy the park, the weather, and the events.
Derek Jeter and A-Rod clearly know how to play nice. As you can see here, they play long-toss together, hang-out during practice together...
The game was actually a good one -- it came down to the last out (NL had bases-loaded with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth down a run). Scott Sanford and I put another notch in our memorable slew of games that we've attended together...
Today was the "Workout Day" for the All Stars -- everybody got to hang out and watch B.P., and there was a lot of interleague-chatting going on amongst the players, who really seemed to be enjoying each other's company and the sunny afternoon:
Barry Bonds didn't take part in the Home Run Derby, but during batting practice he put on a show:
The All Star weekend also brings strange sights, like A-Rod warming up with Big Poppy:
The Counting Crows played before the Derby began -- the pyrotechnics were a bit odd (especially during the day):
Aaron Barnes, Kevin Gottesman and I had a great time watching Vladimir Guerrerro beat Alex Rios in the final of the Home Run Derby -- Vlad's longest shot went out of the stadium in LF into the parking lot -- but there were other fine performances today by Matt Holiday, Albert Pujols, and Ryan Howard.
Our friend and longtime Giants (& adopted Carolina) fan, Cary Savas, caught a foul ball (his first in San Francisco, 2nd lifetime) and the Giants went on to take the rubber match of the Yankees series.
It was also the reunion of the 1962 World Series teams -- both Yankees and Giants were being honored -- in attendence: Felipe Alou, Matty Alou, Gaylord Perry, Juan Marichel, Willie McCovey, Orlando Cepeda, Willie Mays -- and that was only on the Giants' side!
Other milestones for today's managers: It is Bruce Bochy's 2,000th game as a manager, and would be Joe Torre's 2,000th win. Didn't happen for Joe this game though...
Listen to the reception for Willie Mays:
Barry Bonds was 1 for 2, with three walks and a hit-by-pitch (on the first pitch of his last at-bat when the Giants were comfortably in the lead) -- he is by far the most feared (least pitched-to) player in baseball:
Barry takes his bad calls like a man -- I've never seen him get hot about balls and strikes:
A-Rod was out-of-his-mind in this series: he was 11-13 at my rough count -- here's one of several RBI's:
Roger Clemens came out of the bullpen (for only the second time in his career), as a tune-up for an upcoming start:
Besides the bevy of Hall-of-Famers in attendence because of the 1962 World Series reunion, there were a bunch of future members on the field: Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Roger Clemens, and even guys like Omar Vizquel and Andy Petitte (who could make the Hall too). Roger Clemens vs. Barry Bonds could have been an epic moment -- but Barry will not swing at balls outside of the zone:
A-Rod got lucky here on this ball hit into the sun:
And a solid close-out to the first series win for the Giants in weeks:
The scuttle in town is that the Giants are going to go after A-Rod to replace Barry as our franchise player:
on a gorgeous day in San Francisco. Lots of great highlights today, with Scott Sanford and Madeleine Cohen cheering on their visiting Yankees:
Kevin was wearing his "Dusty, Gone Fishin'" hat:
Jeter played a great game -- here's one Hall of Famer to another (Omar V):
A-Rod is playing out-of-his-mind right now -- he's something like 10 of 12 against the Giants in the first two games:
The Yankees had at least 18 hits, but they didn't score very much:
A-Rod's 28th dinger of the year looked (to knot the game at 5-5) was impressive -- the scuttle now is that the Giants will go after him to replace Barry Bonds:
Jack and Jack D'Angelo Jr were on hand -- Jack Sr. met Babe Ruth here in San Francisco when he was 4 years old:
